How it is worked out

Tiles per sq ft = 144 / ((length + joint) x (width + joint)) Tiles = area x tiles per sq ft x (1 + waste) Grout (cu in) = (L + W) / (L x W) x joint x thickness x 144 x area Grout (lb) = cu in / 1,728 x 105 lb/ft³

100 sq ft of 12 x 12 in tile with 1/8 in joints is 98 tiles exact, 108 with 10% waste. The joints hold 112.5 cu in of grout, about 7 lb of sanded grout, so one 10 lb bag with room to spare.

Thinset

Coverage depends on the trowel. A bigger notch leaves a thicker bed, so the bag covers less: about 90 sq ft per 50 lb bag with a 3/16 in V-notch, 80 with a 1/4 x 1/4 in square notch, 60 with 1/4 x 3/8 in, and 35 with 1/2 x 1/2 in, in line with Custom Building Products and LATICRETE data sheets. Back-buttering large tiles uses more.

Waste

Straight layouts need about 10% for cuts and breakage. Diagonal and herringbone patterns cut every edge tile, so allow 15%. Buy all the tile from one lot, since colour varies between runs, and keep a box for repairs.

Questions

How many tiles do I need?

Divide 144 by the tile's length times its width, each with one joint added, to get tiles per square foot. Multiply by the area and add 10%. 100 sq ft of 12 x 12 in tile with 1/8 in joints takes 108 tiles.

How much grout do I need?

It depends on joint width, tile size and thickness. 100 sq ft of 12 x 12 x 3/8 in tile with 1/8 in joints takes about 7 lb of sanded grout; 1/4 in joints double it.

How much thinset do I need?

With a 1/4 x 3/8 in square-notch trowel, about one 50 lb bag per 60 sq ft. Large-format tile on a 1/2 x 1/2 in notch takes a bag per 35 sq ft or so.

How much extra tile should I buy?

10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal or herringbone. Keep the leftover box for repairs.

How many 12x24 tiles are in a square foot?

Half a tile. With a 1/8 in joint, 100 sq ft takes just over 49 tiles before waste, so 55 with 10%.
