How EV charging cost is worked out
A compact electric SUV using 30 kWh per 100 miles, driven 1,000 miles a month, uses 300 kWh. Charged at home at the U.S. average of 18.19¢, that is $54.57 a month, or 5.5¢ a mile. The same 1,000 miles in a 27.2 mpg gas car at $4.35 a gallon costs $160.
The EPA’s kWh per 100 miles figure is measured from the wall outlet, so it already includes the energy lost while charging. The number on the car’s own trip screen is usually lower because it leaves those losses out.
Home, public and fast charging cost very different amounts
- Home. You pay your electricity rate, often less on an overnight EV plan. This is where most of the savings come from.
- Public Level 2. Often $0.25 to $0.40 per kWh, sometimes billed by the hour, and some workplaces and stores offer it free.
- DC fast charging. Often $0.37 to $0.80 per kWh, and some networks add session or idle fees. A car that only fast charges can cost as much per mile as an efficient gas car.
Prices vary by network, state and time of day, so put in what you actually pay.
What does it cost to charge a Tesla?
A 2026 Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD is rated at 134 MPGe, about 25.2 kWh per 100 miles. At the U.S. average home rate that is 4.6¢ a mile, or $45.75 for 1,000 miles. Tesla does not publish usable battery capacity, so for a full charge enter the figure for your car in the battery field.
EV charging cost by state
Home charging only, 30 kWh per 100 miles, 1,000 miles a month, at each state’s average residential rate for January to July 2026. Savings are against a 27.2 mpg car at the national average of $4.35 a gallon; gas prices also vary by state.

Questions
How much does it cost to charge an electric car?
At the U.S. average home rate of 18.19¢ per kWh, a typical EV using 30 kWh per 100 miles costs about 5.5¢ a mile, or $54.57 for 1,000 miles. A full charge of a 75 kWh battery at home is about $13.64, and roughly $27.75 to $60.00 at a DC fast charger.
How do I calculate EV charging cost?
Multiply the miles you drive by the car's kWh per 100 miles, divide by 100, and multiply by your price per kWh. 1,000 miles at 30 kWh per 100 miles is 300 kWh; at 18¢ that is $54.
Is charging an EV cheaper than gas?
At home, almost always. At the national averages, home charging costs about 5.5¢ a mile against 16.0¢ for a 27.2 mpg gas car at $4.35. Relying mostly on DC fast chargers can close most of that gap.
How much does it cost to charge a Tesla at home?
A 2026 Model Y Long Range RWD (134 MPGe, about 25.2 kWh per 100 miles) costs about 4.6¢ a mile at the U.S. average home rate, roughly $45.75 a month for 1,000 miles.
How much does an EV add to my electric bill?
About 300 kWh a month for 1,000 miles in a typical EV, which is $54.57 at the U.S. average rate. The average U.S. home uses about 863 kWh a month, so it is roughly a third more electricity.
What is an eGallon?
The cost of the electricity needed to drive an EV as far as a comparable gas car goes on one gallon. The calculator shows it for your car, rate and comparison mpg, so you can compare it directly with the price at the pump.
